Description: 

This workshop will provide attendees with opportunities to develop a systematic approach to inquiry-based teaching and student learning. Models of inquiry will be shared that develop the necessary culture to create wonder, teacher-student collaboration, development of essential questions and paths for exploration and research. These elements provide students with rich learning experiences and opportunities to transfer their knowledge of the English Language Arts into authentic lifelong learning opportunities. Connections will be made to ELA Common Core Standards.

Laura Beltchenko

Presenter Bio: 

Laura Beltchenko is a 38-year veteran educator. Her career in public education includes classroom teacher, reading specialist, teacher and coordinator of gifted programs, as well as associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction for a K-12-unit school district. She is committed to the professional development of teachers to support the implementation of best practice literacy instruction. Laura believes in the use of high quality children’s literature as a vehicle to support both the cognitive and affective development of all ages of students. Her personal children’s literature collection is vast with an appreciation for quality authors and illustrators.

She was awarded the Illinois North Suburban Library System Library Advocate of the Year for her advocacy of school and public libraries, and was also named the Lake County, Illinois Innovative Educator by the Illinois Principals Association. As an advocate for literacy development for teachers and administrators, she held the post of president of the Suburban Council of the International Reading Association (SCIRA) for four years. She is also an active member of the Illinois Reading Council (IRC) and the International Literacy Association (ILA) and is a presenter at their annual conventions.

Laura is very involved with the Illinois Association for Gifted Children (IAGC) and National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), and was awarded Administrator of the Year by NAGC for her advocacy of academically talented children. She is the current chairman of the Illinois State Board of Education Gifted Education Advisory Council and immediate past professional development chair of the Illinois Association of Title I Directors. Laura is a proud member of the Friends of the Center for Teaching Through Children’s Books at National Louis University. She is currently a Board of Trustee member for Lincoln College in Lincoln, Illinois and served on the Libertyville District #70 Board of Education for 24 years. Above all, she values her involvement in education at all levels.

Laura has presented at state and national conventions on topics such as balanced literacy, gifted education, and children’s literature, and continually studies and presents on the English Language Arts Common Core Standards and Balanced Assessment. She is an avid collector and speaker on the Evolution of Children’s Literature Through the Lens of Little Golden Books that recently celebrated their 75th anniversary. Her chapter, discussing the needs of diverse learners in the ELA CCSS, can be found in the book Accelerating and Extending Literacy for Diverse Students, 2015.

Cancellations after that date will lead to you/your district forfeiting the right to a refund or non-payment of the registration. Because we understand that, as school personnel, circumstances change from day to day and scheduling conflicts may arise at any time, you may send someone from your district in your place.
