McKinney-Vento Roundtable HB261 EDUC-Homeless Child Assistance

Course Type:

  • Teacher Workshop

Course Date:

Tuesday, March 13, 2018 - 1:00pm to 3:00pm

One of the biggest challenges that school districts face with McKinney-Vento students is the cost of transporting students back to the school of origin.  Aside from the cost, it puts additional stress on students that need to sometimes travel great distances, and leave for school hours before start time.

This bill allows school districts to use general transportation funds to provide families with financial help to prevent the loss of housing or assistance with re-housing.  This is done through a referral to a local Continuum of Care Agency in your area (homeless provider).  The school district will be able to submit  the housing costs to ISBE for reimbursement.

This meeting is open to McKinney-Vento EL Liaisons, Business Managers, Social Workers and Continuum of Care Homeless Agencies along with other personnel.  We will discuss possible models of developing a process or plan  of how to implement this bill in order to put the best interest of students first, along with saving at times significant money for transportation costs of M-V eligible students.
